How to Foil Your Vinyl Material (Infographic)

by Richelle Naegle

One day while searching Pinterest, I found a video that someone had made on the Heidi Swapp page where she used Silhouette permanent vinyl with her laminator machine to foil the vinyl, The purpose was so that she could adhere the design to a coffee mug. You can check out that video here.

We’ve made an infographic to explain the process so you know how to foil your vinyl material. I also offer my own handiwork below the infographic, so you can see how it works in action. Without further ado:

More About Foiling Vinyl

I was so excited to try this with my own twist – I wanted to decorate my walls! Which of course means I couldn’t use permanent vinyl, so I did a little craft experiment. I started with 3 different vinyl brands: Cricut vinyl, Silhouette vinyl, and CGull vinyl. I used the Heidi Swapp Minc machine with the temperature set to 4 and some Orange Minc Reactive foil.

I was curious about which brand would work the best, and it turned out Silhouette’s removable vinyl didn’t work out nearly as well as the permanent did. The material that worked the very best was the CGull vinyl, which is good news because it’s the cheapest option. It adhered so nicely and evenly. Now to put the bonded materials into action! I found this fun quote at the Silhouette store. It says “do what you love”. So using the green CGull vinyl and my CAMEO, I cut out the phrase. I chose Blue and Hot Pink Minc Reactive foil to cover the vinyl and ran it though the machine (again, on setting 4).

When I pulled the foil off, this is what I found…some very beautiful and shiny foiled vinyl.
Then I uses Silhouette transfer paper to move this image to my wall.

All finished! I love how it turned out. It does have a little more shimmer than the Cricut foil and using the MINC colors, you have a larger variety of options. I hope this has inspired you to foil some of your vinyl. If you try this out, let me know how it works for you. Please share your project with me on our Google+ Paper Crafting Fanatics page, or on our Facebook page. I can’t wait to see what you create!do what you love foil vinyl design
